The Lovers (For Pamela Colman Smith)
(Mama)
Best known for designing the iconic Rider Tarot deck, Pamela Colman Smith was the London-born daughter of an American merchant and his Jamaican wife. She wrote and illustrated several books inspired by folk tales, and also illustrated books of poems by William Butler Yeats, who introduced her to the Hermetic Order Of The Golden Dawn. In her later years she moved to Bude, Cornwall, where she died in 1951.
Zoë: vocal, uke
Sarah: vocal, steel-string guitar
Jarvis: harmonium, percussion
Wands of willow, swords of steel
The dancing fool and fortunes wheel
With watercolour, ink and pen
She makes the symbols live again
The Lovers ...
She lets the music guide her hand
To ancient times and other lands
Joins in esoteric rites
That satisfy strange appetites
The Lovers ...
Blood from the broken cup
Fire from the sky
Unseen hands to lift it up
Stars falling on earth
Blood from the broken cup
Hooded and bound
Unseen hands to lift it up
She seeks further
The Lovers ...
Hearing pictures, seeing sounds
Crimson wings and oak leaf crowns
She gives the poets vision form
A sister of the Golden Dawn
The Lovers ...
