SATURDAY, 22 OCTOBER 2011: SONORA TX-AUSTIN TX
Posted on October 22, 2011
On our way from Sonora to Austin, we spotted Ronnie’s Pit BBQ just outside Johnson City, Texas, and decided to stop for lunch. Looking at the ranks of pick-up trucks lined up outside, we could see it was a popular spot, and no wonder. Gorgeous food and ridiculously huge portions at amazing prices. If you look carefully at the photo below, you can see the chef at work under the corrugated metal awning. Best not to look too closely at the age and cleanliness of the equipment ... especially as the food was utterly delicious.
On we drove to the Austin and the home of Paul Barker, the very spot from which we’d departed way back on the 1st of September, which by now feels like a lifetime ago. Paul was away, unfortunately, but had kindly agreed to let us stay in his absence, and his two beautiful Great Danes seemed to be glad of the company.
I also owed tonight’s gig indirectly to Paul: it was Paul who’d invited me to play a set at Artz Ribhouse in Austin on a previous tour. Matt Hiland of Open Ears Concerts had seen me there and invited me to do a concert for his series, which takes place in St Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Austin-area singer Sarah Dinan and her band played a fine support set, and the candles in front of the stage (as well as in sconces on the walls) made for a lovely atmosphere -- photos below!
